Our most recent journey was not a smooth one. In order to save you a similar fate, I thought I would share the 5 Travel Mistakes I’ve Recently Made. Please enjoy a laugh at my expense and I hope your next trip will be much smoother than ours.
1. Flying Alaska Airlines
After our most recent vacation, I don’t have the highest opinion of Alaska Airlines. Now, before I complain I do want to say that every single person I interacted with that works for the airline was helpful and kind. However, our flight was delayed multiple times and then canceled without reason. They re-routed us to a city two hours from our destination, so we had to rent a car and drive. But when we arrived in that city our bag had gotten lost… it was an absolute mess.
Also, the planes themselves seemed old and dirty and the seats were microscopic. I’m six feet tall and by the time we had landed after our second flight my body was cramping.
2. No change of clothes
If you ever have a layover then there is a chance your bag will be misplaced. I recommend packing a change of clothes in your carry-on for emergencies. We nearly had to buy new clothes, but our bag was found and retrieved at 10:00pm. till, 24 hours in the same clothing… I really would have liked a spare.
3. No Apple Airtag
I usually put an apple airbag in our checked bag, so we know where it is if it gets lost. I forgot to on our most recent trip and boy was I regretting it.
4. Booking connection too close
A week before we went to California I realized our layover was only 30 minutes long. Basically I would have 30 minutes to get from one flight to another. In my experience, that is simply not enough time between flights. You can taxi on the runway for that long and miss your connection. I recommend choosing a flight with at least an hour layover if you can.
And don’t worry, I changed our flights to a different airline on the way home to avoid the short layover.
5. Planning too much
The last mistake I’ve recently made is being too ambitious with my plans. When you travel with a preschooler, you need to be ready for your plans to go awry. My daughter normally adjusts well when we travel, but on our last trip to Florida she did not. We had to adjust several plans to accommodate longer naps and rest time. When traveling as a family, remember to pick a couple things you want to do and anything else will be a bonus!
