In June we took two separate road trips. One was a 16 hour drive to Gulf Shores Alabama and the other was a 12 hour drive to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Needless to say we’ve learned a lot of tips and tricks on how to handle a long drive. Read more about the Mistakes We’ve Made on Our Latest Road Trips below!
1. No Portable Potty
We forgot to pack our little portable potty for Ronia at the beginning of our Gulf Shores road trip. I ended up buying a new little potty at Target and I’m so glad I did. We used it multiple times on that long drive.
2. Underestimating Time
Stopping to use the bathroom or grab some food can add up. We made the mistake of underestimating the impact of those stops on our arrival time. Things like weather and traffic and construction can also play a role in your travel day. If you are taking a road trip with kids, I recommend adding a couple hours to your schedule for such events.
3. Packing Lunch
Our family drove in two separate cars to Gulf Shores, and the other vehicle had most of the sandwich items for lunch. We ended up getting separated on our drive and people were getting a little hangry. It would have been a good idea for us to have all our lunch things for our family in our car just in case.
4. Choosing a Hotel
Out of all the hotels we stayed at this month, most of them were excellent. There was only one hotel that did not meet our standards of cleanliness. The ratings and reviews online had been glowing, but once we arrived it was another story. Don’t be afraid to change your hotel if you don’t feel comfortable, and always thoroughly check them out before you book.
