An Honest Review of the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

It’s time for An Honest Review of the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, based on our recent trip to Universal Studios. I had high expectations for this hotel, but was sadly disappointed. I’m not sure we will ever be back… read why below.

The Bad News:

Construction Warning

There is currently construction at Loews Portofino, which we were expecting. They gave us a warning when we booked the room. We did not, however, realize how extensive this construction would be. Our room had no view, as the window was covered in plastic. There is scaffolding everywhere and worst of all was the smell. It smelled like cigarettes outside, in the entrance to our building at even a bit in the hallways. Not ideal when you are traveling with a child.

Service

Another strike against this hotel was the service. The only people who were helpful and kind to us during our stay were the valets. Those boys were amazing. Outside of that it felt as though we were fending for ourselves.

Food

Loews Portofino boasts 8 restaurants and lounges. Unfortunately, due to a hurricane we had to cut out trip short and many plans were adjusted. We didn’t get to try anything but room service on our stay. Another unfortunate thing was that room service… was not good. We ordered Italian food at an Italian-themed hotel and it was just….. not good. Even the fries we got for our daughter were stale.

Atmosphere

Portifino Bay is stunning in some areas, but confusing in others. In one space you feel like you are in a fancy Italian resort, but in others you are in someones badly decorated living room. The theming isn’t consistent. I wish they would completely commit to being an expensive, exclusive resort. It would feel more special.

Now for the Good (ish) News…

Room

The room was okay, nothing special. The bathroom was spacious, and the arm chair in our room doubled as an extra pull-out bed. This was helpful to have for our daughter. Other than that you can tell this hotel is a little dated and old. (And we didn’t have a view, because of the plastic and scaffolding.)

Perks

Staying at a premier hotel at Universal means you get a few unique perks. Early park entry, boat access and and express pass are among them. Again, due to the weather we didn’t get a chance to utilize the express pass to it’s full potential. That would have been really fun!
