My husband gifted me a reading retreat weekend for my birthday, and it was such a wonderful surprise. My sister and I went to a little AirBnb in Cottonwood Falls, KS and read books for 48 hours. What a dream. Learn more below about Why You Should Take a Reading Retreat This Year.

First, What is a Reading Retreat?
A reading retreat (for me) is a day or weekend in which you cultivate a peaceful space to read as many books as possible. I’ve also heard of people hosting reading retreats that consist of a large group of friends who gather to read, exchange books, and do crafts. Our reading retreat was just my sister and I reading in peace for 48 hours.

1. Reduce Stress
Studies show that reading can reduce stress by up for 68%. Reading lowers your heart rate and provides a healthy escape in which you can learn to process your emotions. Having a reading retreat was so lovely, because it gave me time to be at peace. There was nothing on my calendar that weekend except reading.
2. Low Cost Vacation
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly vacation, then a reading retreat is an excellent idea. My husband gifted me this weekend for my birthday and he found us a lovely little AirBnb in Cottonwood Falls, KS. Was the town super exciting? No, but that wasn’t the point of the retreat. You don’t need much more than food, water and books. There’s no need to fix your hair or makeup. You can just be.

3. Bonding Time
Like I mentioned previously, my sister and I went together for this reading retreat weekend. While we spent most of the time with our noses in a book, it was nice to share our favorite quotes, laugh at funny passages or chat while we made soup for dinner. I recommend bringing a dear friend with you for your reading retreat. Someone who understands what you’re there to do and loves books as much as you do.
4. Quiet
Our lives are filled with constant noise, from our phones to the TV or voices of others. This is especially true if you are a parent. My daughter is now in a very talkative phase, and although I love her beautiful imagination, it was also so wonderful to experience silence on our reading retreat. I could shower, eat, and read without interruption. Over the course of the weekend I finished almost four books, which is impossible to do at home.
