A few years ago we decided to dip our toes into the world of Disney by buying a one day park pass. We took a peek at all four parks and were amazed at just how many things there were to do. It was overwhelming to say the least. Since that day we have been able to visit the parks a few more times and really learn the ropes. Read below to discover 8 Mistakes to Avoid on Your 1st Trip to Disney World.
1. Learn How to Navigate the App
The #1 mistake we made before we went to Disney was not learning not to navigate the app. In fact, we had no idea there was an app to navigate. Take some time before your 1st trip to Disney World to familiarize yourself with the app and it will save you so much time on your vacation.
2. Research Genie +
Genie+ is a paid service on the Disney World app that helps you bypass the standby line on select attractions. It’s not the easiest service to get to know, but once you understand it the Genie+ service will save you so much time. It’s actually really fun to use when you know what you’re doing. My family thinks I’m some sort of wizard, because I’m able to get us on so many rides.

3. Lower Your Expectations
Another mistake to avoid on your first trip to Disney World is having high expectations. You won’t be able to see every inch of the park in one day and still have your sanity… or your feet. Disney World has four parks and multiple water parks and they are all huge! Make a short list of things you want to do most and anything else you accomplish will be a bonus.
4. Stay on Property
One thing that can help you accomplish more at the Disney World parks is staying on property. Yes, I know. Staying at a Disney World hotel can be pricey, but trust me it is beyond worth it. Some day I will write a blog post about all the pros of staying on property, but until then just know transportation is much easier and the hotels are great for families.
5. Take an Afternoon Break
Do not make the mistake of powering through the day only to burn out before fireworks. Please take a mid-day break, especially if you are traveling with kids who still nap. You will not be wasting time and money if you go back to the hotel for a little siesta. Your tired kids, your feet, and your overstimulated brain will thank you.
6. Do a Bit of Training & Wear the Right Shoes
Okay, so this is technically two points, but they go hand in hand. On an average day at Disney World we do 20,000 steps. Easily. Take some time before you visit Disney to train. Go on long walks in your park shoes and make sure they are comfortable. Your feet will likely be sore no matter what, but you won’t fall apart if you prepare your body beforehand.
7. Be Patient
Disney World is crowded. Even on a slow day, there are still a lot of people. Weather might be unexpected or your child might have a rough day. Things happen. Be sure to stay patient with other guests, cast members, and your family.
8. Make a Budget
Another mistake you can make on your first trip to Disney is not setting a budget. It’s easy to get carried away when you see all the fun things to buy and do in the parks. Set yourself a budget to save headaches when you get home.
9. Take Your Own Pictures
When you meet characters or go to certain areas of the park they have a photo pass system. I recommend taking your own pictures as well as utilizing the photo pass system. You might not like the pictures they take or want to purchase them. Taking your own pictures will ensure you have those memories for free and just how you like.
10. Go to 1 Park Per Day
The final mistake I think you can make on your 1st trip to Disney World is to go to multiple parks in one day. At least on your first trip, I recommend going to one park per day. There is plenty to do in one park, and you will get the most out of each location if you give it it a full day (minus that afternoon break of course).
