The Best Things to Pack for the Zoo

My husband and I are zoo fanatics. On our honeymoon we went to three different zoos/aquariums and loved every second of it. If you are a zoo fan like we are then it’s important you pack the right things to maximize your time at the park. Check out our list of The Best Things to Pack for the Zoo below.

1. Backpack

Choose the right bag for you on your next trip to the zoo. It’s better to be prepared, but you also might not want to lug around a giant backpack for the whole day. You may want to pack a fanny pack instead. Whatever you choose, make sure you have room for the essentials.

2. Zoo Membership

Do you enjoy going to the zoo multiple times a year? Then it will certainly be worth the cost to support your local zoo and purchase a membership. Having a zoo membership can also get you discounts at other associated zoos.

3. Sunscreen

If you’re planning on going to the zoo during the warmer months of the year then it’s important to pack sunscreen. You might not realize just how much sun exposure you are getting until the end of the day when you look like a lobster.

4. Hand Sanitizer

Zoos are dirty. Think about all the children touching the railings and glass windows. Packing sanitizer is necessary.

5. Snacks

Zoo snacks tend to be a bit pricey. Save your money by packing healthy snacks or a sack lunch rather than paying steep prices at the concessions stand. Snacks also might come in handy if you are “hangry” and the food lines are too long.

6. Water Bottle

Hydration is important for a day at the zoo. You will likely be so distracted by the animals and excitement that you may forget to bring water. Having your own water bottle is not only smart but better for the environment. Also, bottled water at the zoo is expensive.

7. Quarters

If you love to feed the Koi fish, turtles and birds then you will want to bring along some quarters for the food dispensers. Some zoos allow you to feed the tropical birds or barnyard animals as well. It’s good to be prepared!

8. Tissue

Do you suffer from seasonal allergies? Many zoos are also classified as botanical gardens and may have plants that could make you sneeze. Pack a few tissues just in case allergies surprise you.

9. Walking Shoes

Technically this is not an item to pack, but an item you wear. Don’t try and be cute. If the zoo is big enough then you will regret wearing sandals and a summer dress by the end of the day. Dress for lots of walking. You can still be cute and comfortable.
