Below are 10 Ways to Prepare Your Home Before Vacation. Why prepare your home before you go on vacation? Well, think about it as investing in the mental health of future you. There’s nothing worse than returning from a peaceful vacation to absolute chaos.
1. Take Out All the Trash
The first thing to do to prepare your home for vacation is to take out the trash. there anything worse to coming home to a smelly house? I don’t think so. Especially when something like potatoes have gone bad…
2. Wash Bedding
Okay, so this item isn’t a necessity, but after a long day of travel it is so nice to come home to a clean and made bed. I might be biased, but my bed is the most comfortable place on the planet. When I get home from the airport I just want to shower and sink into clean sheets.
3. Have a Plan for the Mail
Do you have someone coming by to check your mail, or do you need to put a stop to it at the post office? Either way, you don’t want packages stuck on the porch for a week while you’re away. Or, God forbid, stollen.
4. Unplug Small Appliances
Save yourself a little on the electric bill by unplugging things like the microwave, fans, etc. You won’t be using them while you’re away anyway, and it will also protect your home in case of a power surge or fire.
5. Check the Thermostat
Speaking of bills, you might want to drop the thermostat in the winter or raise it during the summer. Again, you won’t be home, so there’s no need to heat or cool your home more than necessary.
6. Do the Laundry
Do you really want to get home from a relaxing vacation and find you have an excessive amount of laundry? That’s just sad. Help future you and get the laundry out of the way now.
7. Water Your Houseplants
Do you need to have someone come by your home while you’re away and water the plants? Or maybe you can water them just before you leave and they will be okay while you’re away. If you have a garden or it’s the dead of summer you might need to make a plan for the yard as well. Just don’t forget those poor plant babies.
8. Clean Out the Refridgerator
Smells, guys. I hate bad smells. Get rid of the leftovers in your fridge before you leave.
9. Trash Pick-up
Will your trash pick-up day happen while you’re away? Then I recommend putting the cans on the curb, or having someone else do so.
10. Tidy Your Home
Your home doesn’t have to be perfectly clean when you go away on vacation, but it might be a good idea to do the basics. Wash dishes, vacuum, pick up toys… That way when you arrive home you can be at peace and not scrambling to clean.
