What do you think about when you think of Disney World? Maybe it’s matching outfits, family photos, rope dropping and staying until fireworks. Those things work for some families, but not for ours. Below are five Unpopular Things to Do at Disney World that we do as a family. Enjoy!
1. Don’t Rope-Drop
We typically do not rope drop Disney World. You might be wondering why, and the truth is it is just not easy or fun. When you have a preschooler, getting out the door in a timely manner is quite a feat. I don’t like to feel overwhelmed at the beginning of our park day, so although we might utilize early park admission from time to time, we very rarely rope drop.
2. Take an Afternoon Break
One non-negotiable part of our trips to Disney is taking an afternoon break. Now that idea is not popular with most Disney-goers, because they want to get the most bang for their buck. And I get it, you paid a lot of money to be at Disney. However, I would argue that taking an afternoon break actually helps us have a better quality trip than if we had skipped it.
Everyone gets air conditioning, a chance to rest their feet and get away from all the noise and excitement. Also, my daughter gets a much needed nap. You also avoid the hottest part of the day. Yes to all the above.
3. Pack Patient Pants
I have found that many people do not pack their patient pants when going to Disney World. You should know that there will be long lines, rides might go down and the weather could change. Cast members are doing their best and there are hundreds if not thousands of people in the parks all hoping to have the best family vacation. Plan to be patient with yourself and others.
4. Avoid Long Lines
We avoid long lines like the plague. It’s just not fun to wait in line for more than 15-20 minutes with a small child, and honestly it just feels like I’m wasting time. To avoid lines we do three things:
- Strategically Utilize Disney+
- Watch the Disney World app “wait times”
- Choose to ride rides early in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid crowds
I will never need to ride a ride so badly that I will wait for an hour or more. Maybe that’s my age talking, but it’s true.
5. Relax
When you think about taking a trip to Disney World, you might think of the crowds and rushing and chaos. That’s not how we do Disney. We plan time to relax and enjoy the moment. We adjust plans if we need to, or cancel reservations if we feel rushed. I mean, you are on vacation. The point of being on vacation is to relax, be present and spend time with the people you love.
It might not be popular or feel natural, but I encourage you to relax while you’re at Disney. Take a long lunch or a nap. Watch your kids play on the hub grass. Walk slowly around world showcase in Epcot. People watch on Main Street USA. Enjoy the magic.
