Top 10 Tips to Make the Airport a Breeze

We have gone on enough flights as a family to trouble shoot all the various things that can go wrong. Airports used to stress me out, but now I find them to be much more simple. Read below to discover our Top 10 Tips to Make the Airport a Breeze.

1. Get TSA Pre-Check

The best thing we have done to avoid stressful travel days is getting TSA pre-check. With TSA Pre-Check, you don’t have to take off your shoes or separate your laptop. The line is much shorter and the ordeal of going through security is much more simple.

2. Pack a Rolling Carry-On

There’s nothing more frustrating then rushing through an airport with a heavy duffle bag. It’s much easier to have a rolling carry-on. I also recommend trying not to carry too much in the airport, because the more you pack the more you have to keep track of.

3. Try to Avoid Layovers

We avoid layovers whenever possible, because in my experience when you have a layover there is always a chance your checked luggage will be lost. Also, when you travel with kids then layovers are that much more difficult. There’s always a chance your first flight will be delayed and you will miss the second. It’s just easier not to travel non-stop.

4. Take an Extra Outfit

If you are unable to avoid a layover during your travel day, I recommend packing an extra outfit and toiletries in your carry-on bag. Finding out your flight is canceled and not having a change of clothes is the worst, and it’s happened to us more than once. You’d think we’d learn our lesson.

5. Don’t Forget Snacks

You never know what establishments will be open or how long the line will be. I recommend packing extra snacks in your bag for those moments when you are hangry and unable to easily access food.

6. Arrive Early

It sounds cliche, but I highly recommend arriving two hours before your flight. Many things can go wrong on the way to the airport, after parking the car, in security or even at the gate. It’s good to arrive in plenty of time to adjust your plan accordingly.

7. Re-Check Your Gate Number

Like I said, things can go wrong. Remember to re-check your gate number while you are at the airport to make sure it didn’t change. You can also sign up for alerts on your airline’s app. However, I found the physical board in the airport to be the most accurate.

8. Get an AirTag

The last of Our Top Tips to Make the Airport a Breeze is to get an Airtag or two. Put one in your carry-on and one in your checked bag. That way you always know where your personal belongings are.

9. Get the Wiggles Out

When traveling with little kids, it’s important to get all the wiggles out. We like to find a place away from the crowds and let our daughter run back and forth as much as she wants to. We make a game of it, and it’s actually her favorite part of our travel day routine.

10. Download the Airline App

It’s always good to have your boarding pass in multiple places. You can view your flight details in the airline app, but I recommend having a physical boarding pass and/or downloading the tickets into your Apple wallet. The airline app will also come in handy to track flight changes, watch TV or movies on the plane and utilize the internet.
