Last month my four year old and I traveled to Disney World, just the two of us. We were supposed to have done this trip last year, but had to rush home because of incoming hurricane. I was worried about how it would go with no one to help me, but I have to say it was one of the most special trips we’ve ever taken. Read more below about Honest Thoughts About Our Mother-Daughter Trip to Disney World.

1. Slowing Down
Our trips to Disney World can sometimes be chaotic, but this time I wanted to keep it simple. We chose to do things the slow way. We might take a little longer getting ready in the morning or take a longer quiet time in the afternoon. We might change our plans, because we saw a character we wanted to meet. I didn’t have rides books every day. The slow pace was lovely, and much needed by us both.
2. Talking
My daughter is four years old now and has the biggest imagination. She will talk and talk and talk if you just let her get going. One of the highlights of our trip was how much time we had to just talk to each other. There wasn’t a a list of chores and errands clouding my day, so I could give her all my attention. I’m trying to do more of that now that we are at home, because that time with her was so precious.

3. Kindness
My daughter and I have never really traveled alone together. Someone is always present at the beginning or end of our trip, if not the whole time. This was the first vacation with just the two of us. Something that amazed me was the kindness of strangers. Cast members and Disney guests alike were so sweet to my daughter. We met all sorts of new friends on the bus, in lines for rides, at shows and while trading pins. Their kindness made our trip all the more magical and memorable.
4. Age
Our trip may not have gone so well if my daughter had been younger. She turned four in December and I’ve seen her grow so much in the last few months. She’s much better at following directions, able to help herself in the bathroom and tell me what she needs. She is also tall enough for lots of rides and is able to walk for longer periods of time. I think four was the perfect age for our first mother-daughter trip.

Final Thoughts…
The idea of a solo trip with your child or children can seem overwhelming, but after this vacation with my daughter, I encourage you to take the leap. Your kids are only kids for so long, and the memories you make will be worth any small blips along the way. It’s worth it, I promise. And if solo travel makes you a little nervous, then let me be the first to tell you… you can do this. Parenting has it’s challenges no matter where you are, why not be at Disney?
