Flying with a toddler is not impossible. Honestly, it is much easier than I thought it would be. Sure there are those moments when you might want to pull your hair out, but every day has those moments, you know? Read below to discover our tips on How to Navigate Flying with a Toddler.

1. Bring Lots of Snacks.
Snacks are key. Try bringing new and fun snacks or some of your toddler’s favorites. When we fly I bring pouches and packaged snacks and even fresh fruit. You can never have enough variety and quantity in my opinion.
2. Try to Coordinate Nap Time.
If you are able, try and organize your flight with nap time in mind. Our daughter isn’t the absolute best napper, but planes are a natural sound machine and she will usually doze off if we time the flight just right.
3. Pack Your Carry-on Wisely.
Do not bring too much with you on the plane. The more you have to carry, the more overwhelming it will seem. I recommend packing the list of things below in your carry-on. Keep in mind this is a basic and not exhaustive list. Then keep a separate bag of snacks and toys at your feet for easy access.
2+ Changes of Clothes & Underwear (kids are messy and delays happen)
1 Extra Outfit for You (it can’t hurt)
Diapers and Wipes (if your toddler isn’t potty trained)
Plastic Bag or Ziplock (to store dirty clothes)
Small First Aid Kit
Toiletries (in case of delays)
Carrier
Charger Cords & Charge Packs
4. Don’t Forget Diaper Rash Cream or Spray.
Our daughter had a bad rash after a long day of travel, and we forgot the diaper cream that works for her. Always pack some just in case!
5. Decide if You Need a Car Seat.
We had Ronia in a car seat on the plane until I felt she was big enough to sit in her seat well. If you would feel better about your child having a more secure seat on the plane, then go ahead and bring the car seat!
6. Space Out the Toys.
Don’t give them too many new things at once. If you get through all the activities before take off it will be a long flight. Try and space things out a bit and save the best and most distracting things for last. Below are a few things that we found effective on the plane:
No-Mess Markers
Stickers
Fidget Toys
Books
Busy Book
Tablet
7. Board Early.
Boarding early might seem like the opposite of what you want to do. Your toddler will be on the plane longer, sure, but you will be able to get settled if you board earlier. This is especially important if you are using a car seat.
8. Prepare Ahead of Time.
Preparing ahead of time doesn’t just include packing and buying tickets. It also means talking to your toddler about flying on a plane and what you will do at the airport. The more you prepare their expectations the better.
9. Utilize the Amazon Fire.
We save screen time for a last resort. Sometimes that’s 30 minutes into a flight to be honest. Other times we don’t need the screen at all. I will say if you plan to bring an Amazon Fire or something similar, then don’t forget to charge it. Download movies or shows directly to the device. Give it a few test-runs before your trip. There is nothing worse than needing a screen to distract and not having one that works.
10. Ignore “those” people.
Finally, I want to encourage you to ignore “those” people. We all know those people. They are going to give you looks if your toddler isn’t completely silent. They will sigh when it takes you a minute to get our of your seats. Remember, you are doing your best. Every day with a toddler is different and they can be a lot. Ignore those people and focus on your child. They are what matters most.
