Family vacations can be a wonderful, memory filled adventure… or they can be a messy tragedy. Perhaps a bit of both? One thing that can help minimize the stress and tension is to be prepared. Read about the Things to Keep in Mind on Your Next Family Vacation below!
1. Have everyone list 2-3 things they definitely want to do on this vacation.
Everyone has a different idea of how vacation is going to be. Take a few minutes before your trip to ask each member of the family what their ideal trip would look like. Do they want to see the sunrise? Eat at a specific restaurant? Lay on the beach? Hike a trail? If you know what everyone would like to do before you travel, then you can better plan for the trip itself.
2. Give each other grace.
The best thing you can keep in mind on a family vacation is to give each other grace. Be patient. Everyone will be cranky or tired at some point. That’s just part of family vacation! Be kind and that positive energy will be infectious.
3. Have a back-up plan.
You made a loose plan for the trip, and that’s a good idea. But I encourage you to have a back-up plan. What if you wanted to spend the day at the beach, but it rains? Or you wanted to stop somewhere for lunch, but everyone is hungry two hours early? It’s always a good idea to have a back-up plan or list of ideas just in case!
4. Take a mid-day break.
My tried and true rule for any vacation is to take a mid-day break. Running around and doing things every second of the day can be exhausting. It can also be tiring to be around each other for hours at a time. Schedule an hour or two in the middle of the day for everyone to nap or relax. It will do wonders.
5. Always have snacks.
I don’t know about your family, but mine tends to get “hangry.” It’s always a good idea to pack extra snacks wherever you go to keep everyone from turning on one another just because they need food.
6. Start your day with a quiet time.
This should have been the very first item on my list, because it is by far the most important. Starting your day in prayer with God is an excellent way to get your head and heart right. You pour out of yourself what you put in. Reading scripture, listening to a podcast or simply praying while you lay in bed will help fill your cup.
