Our family drove to Gulf Shores last week to celebrate several big birthdays. We had so much fun spending time together ocean-side. I went ahead and compiled a list of our favorites for those of you who might be curious about visiting. Below are 6 Things You Need to See in Gulf Shores Alabama.
1. Fort Morgan
One of my favorite things to do in Gulf Shores was visiting Fort Morgan. This fort is a military site and a National Historic Landmark that was built in the 1830s. It’s amazing to learn about the history of the site and the view from the top of the fort is breathtaking. You can see the ocean for about 75% of the horizon.
My family also spent some time on the beach on the bay side near the fort. Other than the jellyfish in the water, it was beautiful. We even got to see a pod of dolphins!
2. Tacky Jacks 2
The first restaurant we ate at near Gulf Shores was Tacky Jacks 2. This local chain is well loved by the community and is accessible “by land or sea.” The food was delicious and the staff was very kind. It felt kind of like going to a hometown restaurant.
3. Gulf State Park
If we ever return to Alabama, I would like to spend more time in Gulf State Park. We took family pictures on the beach and it was absolutely beautiful. The Lodge at Gulf State Park has nature walks, bike trails, and an interpretive center. If you love to learn about nature, I recommend checking out this area of Gulf Shores.
4. The Hangout
My family chose The Hangout for one of our dinners and boy was it an experience! There’s live music, outdoor play areas, dancing, beach access and even a large gift shop. I like to think of it as a giant wedding reception party. It was a little loud and chaotic for me, but I’m glad we got to experience it once.
5. Food Craft
My favorite restaurant of the entire trip was Food Craft. The service was impeccable, the atmosphere and view were beautiful and the food was YUM. They had indoor and outdoor seating and were very accommodating for younger kids. All in all I would definitely go here again and if I was a local it would be a weekly event.
6. The Ocean!
Obviously the #1 reason to go to Gulf Shores is to experience the beauty of the ocean. We found the waves could get pretty rough on the gulf side, but the bay side was beautiful and calm. We even saw dolphins! Just beware of jellyfish.
